hawks watched me

hawks watched me
all the way to Denver

from fence posts and traffic signs,
they feigned indifference,
but the alertness in their eyes
betrayed their doing of whatever task
the angels had given them

when I returned home,
I saw a brief flash of feather
in the pine tree outside my window,
and then she was gone
